Do you know what happens when animals born in captivity are rejected by their mothers?
As you can see here, we have a baby monkey taking immediately to a puppy. In fact, what happened here is that Mubi, the African drill monkey, was rejected by his own mother. In the wild, this is essentially a death sentence, but in the Port Lympne Reserve in Kent, there are other options.
Thanks to Mubi’s human caretaker, Simon Jeffrey, who has taken on the role of parent, Mubi has a playmate in Daisy, a Jack Russell, as well as another small dog, Ian.
And it is vital that Mubi grow up, and hopefully will be brought back to the reserve to live with her own kind. The African drill monkey is now at endangered conservation status. Their population has dropped by more than half in the last 30 years because of a combination of deforestation and hunting.
