This Immaculately White Pet Has A Story
You may be wondering why you’re looking at this giant white mammal. If you’ve never seen one of these, you might be wondering how a lab mouse got this big. This opossum’s story, however, is more interesting than you can imagine.
Opossums are very unique animals. As marsupials, they have pouches, and because they’ll eat most anything, they’ve been proven to be very adaptable and prolific.
This opossum, however, can’t be sent back into the wild. Her mother abandoned her when it became clear that she has lucism, a genetic mutation similar to albinism, and that means she lacks pigmentation.
The lucism gave her pure white fur, skin and scales, but as a result, she cannot camouflage herself and so she can’t survive in the wild. Thanks to human intervention, she can live safely in a zoo, and because she is friendly, she is often used to introduce children to mammals.
If you ever run around her, don’t feel bad for her. Because she was found, she is guaranteed a forever home, as well as a lot of good company.
