This Veteran Rescue Dog Revisits Her First Mission – In Ground Zero
Bretagne was one of the dogs on the ground during the events of September 11. After all these years, now a veteran rescue dog she got to revisit ground zero.
This golden retriever was raised and trained to be a member of FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue Task Force. In this capacity, she sought out survivors at ground zero, and also helped look out for other rescuers and first responders as a therapy dog.
During those two weeks, two year old Bretagne served grueling 12 hour shifts, and worked as a pro the whole time. Since then, she served seven years, helping find survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Today, she is retired from search and rescue, and helps teach children how to read.
Today ground zero is a solemn, quiet place, but one can only wonder what Bretagne was thinking when she revisited the place of much tragedy, and that made her the hero that she became.
