Brendan was a well-known professional actor in the 1990s. After completing Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, he opted to take a break in Hollywood before continuing on to acquire his master’s degree. However, he landed consistent acting employment and hasn’t looked back since.

Brendan’s first cinematic role was in Dogfight. Encino Man was his first somewhat successful box office hit. Brendan rose to prominence as the titular character in the 1997 film George of the Jungle. His celebrity was reinforced by the Mummy movie.

These positions did not come cheaply. Brendan had many injuries as a result of the physical demands of the jobs. He had a laminectomy, back procedures, a partial knee replacement, and vocal cord surgery to repair his wounds.

Brendan discussed his wounds, saying, he suppose he was definitely striving too hard, in a negative way. He was patched together with tape and ice by the time he shot the third Mummy picture in China.

Brendan also faced several personal challenges. In 2009, he divorced his wife, Afton Smith. In 2018, his mother died. Brendan reported in 2018 that he was sexually attacked during a luncheon in 2003 by Philip Berk, then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Phillip allegedly groped Brendan.

Brendan left Hollywood for all of these reasons. Brendan attributes much of his recovery to a horse named Pecas, whom he rescued while filming Texas Rising in 2015. When asked when he was certain he could return to Hollywood, Brendan said, “Are you ready for this? It was when I got that horse, who I’m sad to say has gone on to greener pastures, but I learned a great deal.”

Brendan’s most recent production, The Whale, depicts the narrative of Charlie, a lonely 600-pound father attempting to reunite with his daughter. Ellie, played by Sadie Sink, is Fraser’s on-screen daughter. Charlie, Brendan’s character, had an affair with a man and left his family to live with him. Charlie is left alone after his companion dies. To alleviate his discomfort, he turns to eating.

Brendan utilized a prosthetic outfit to attain his 600-pound physique. This helped him to immerse himself in the role. Brendan needed to understand how to move in a different way. He developed muscles he didn’t know he had, he said.

Brendan’s return appears to be on track. He also appears in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Max Barbakow’s Brothers, and Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move, in addition to The Whale. Something wonderful came out of something horrible, he stated. It might take some time for something to occur.
