A court heard how a father stabbed a thief to death in a ‘brutal and savage execution after seeing a gang invade his family home through his Ring doorbell.’ Karl Townsend, 32, and his half brother Jamie Cunningham, 23, equipped themselves with knives after witnessing the burglars outside their home in Halewood, Merseyside, in October of last year.
He is said to have yelled at the three men to leave his house prior to stabbing Jordan Brophy, 31, in the face and head, according to court testimony. Mr. Brophy was stabbed in the eye, and a fragment of shattered blade was left in his brain.
Prosecutors claim Townsend and Cunningham fled the scene however returned to the premises, where the former allegedly stabbed Mr Brophy in the jugular vein. Townsend and Cunningham are accused of killing and having a bladed object before Liverpool Crown Court. Prosecutor Richard Pratt QC told the court that the stabbing was not driven by “dread or fright,” but rather a “brutal and cruel slaughter” of a “defenceless man.”
According to the court, Townsend was visiting his parents’ house when he got an alarm from his doorbell camera that a robbery was occurring at his house. Three guys broke into the house through a side entrance, with a fourth accomplice waiting in a nearby parked car.
Townsend and Cunningham arrived at the location in a Mercedes GLA at approximately 6.26pm, having ‘equipped themselves with huge knives,’ according to the court. The duo yelled at the intruders to leave the property before an incident is claimed to have occurred inside, which was not captured on CCTV. The court heard that Mr Brophy left the scene after suffering two injuries to the face and head and complaining of eye damage. The prosecution told the jury that while burglary is a “disgusting wrongdoing,” it does not “rationalize this amount of terrible brutality.”
