Florida Mom Charged with Death of 7-Month-Old Boy Left in Bathtub While She Had Her Nails Done

Authorities say a Miami mother faces severe murder charges after her child drowned in an unsupervised bathtub while she got her nails done.

As per the arrest warrant, police claim that on May 20, 22-year-old Alyssa Jimmie left the victim — 7-month-old son Prince Mejia — and his 3-year-old sibling in a bathtub with the water running while she walked into the home’s garage to get her nails done at a “at-home manicure station.”

Jimmie reportedly informed investigators that when she departed for the garage approximately 62 feet away, she did not put a stopper on the tub drain.

When Jimmie went to check on her children approximately five to ten minutes later, she reportedly informed investigators that the drain had been clogged with a tiny towel, the tub was full of water, and the newborn was floating face down as the toddler played beside him. According to reports, the 3-year-old understood how to stop the drain with a face cloth.

Jimmie hurried to a neighbor’s house to phone 911, and baby Prince — who doctors claimed had been without a heartbeat for 45 minutes — was transported to a local hospital where hospital professionals were able to revive him.

Doctors declared Prince dead three days later. The infant died as a result of an unintentional drowning, according to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner.

According to the Herald, Jimmie was freed on a $10,000 bail during her court hearing on Thursday, when she was represented by defense attorney Pat Dray.

Dray added that this is simply a terrible event, and the family and Alyssa haven’t had any time to mourn. She is heartbroken about the loss of her kid.

Cesar Jimmie, Jimmie’s father, was present in court and spoke in favour of his daughter’s release. He said to the judge at the time, it’s been tough the last several days. Alyssa has always been a nice daughter, a terrific elder sibling, she’s always loved her kids she didn’t do this on purpose.
