Instead Of Telling Her “Don’t Blink,” Ask , “What Can I Do?”

Story by Lo Mansfield

Instead of telling her, “just you wait,” Ask instead “what can I do?”

Instead of telling her “you’ll miss this,” Ask instead, “what can I do?”

Instead of telling her “I miss those days,” Ask instead, “what can I do?”

Instead of telling her “don’t blink,” Ask instead, “what can I do?”

Instead of telling her “it goes too fast,” Ask instead, “what can I do?”

Because she knows, you see, that it’s coming and it’s fast and then she’ll blink and it’s over.

So she stays up too late and she holds them too long and she gives one more kiss and she reads one more story and she keeps saying yes to everyone except herself – because she knows that it’s all fleeting.

She knows.

So perhaps, instead of reminding her of what she can’t change, do. For her. Do.

And give her back one of those minutes that she can’t stop blinking away.
