Married couple die of cancer 12 hrs apart just two days before Christmas.

Steve Hawkin was the administrator of Yankton County EMS in South Dakota. His coworkers and the community adored him. Along with his wife Wendy Hawkins, the 58-year-old was a fixture in his neighborhood.

He’d been with Yankton County since 2009. He previously worked as a paramedic in Cody, Wyoming, and Yellowstone National Park. In San Diego, California, he began his profession as a paramedic.

Steve has been battling cancer for the past five years. On December 23, 2022, he died as a result of his disease.

Wendy, his wife, had been at his side throughout his sickness. Sadly, she had recently been diagnosed with cancer as well. Wendy was admitted to the hospital a few weeks ago, and Steve shortly after.

According to their son Trenton Hawkins, the husband and wife died within 12 hours of each other.

Wendy was a dedicated housewife who raised the couple’s 3 children, Brad, Mandi, and Trenton. They are all in their twenties now. Brad and Trenton remain at home, while Mandi has relocated to Iowa to be with her boyfriend.

MS deputy administrator Troy Cowman said that it’s really a shock to the system. Everyone here (EMS) is working through it.

Steve was the type of leader that operated the firm the right way, he continued.

With profound sadness we inform you that Yankton County EMS Administrator Steve Hawkins passed away on Friday, December…

Steve’s memorial will be held in the spring, although no firm date has been chosen by the department. The Hawkins kids have put up a GoFundMe page to aid with the costs of their parents’ funerals.

My thoughts are with the Hawkin kids and the rest of the family as they cope with this unfathomable tragedy. Please convey your condolences to Steve and Wendy Hawkins’ family and friends.
