In Florida, the Ocala Police Department has a sergeant by the name of Erica Hay. One morning Erica was doing her patrolling when she stopped by a Dunkin’ Donuts for breakfast. She noticed there was a homeless man hanging around at a gas station next to the donut shop and he was all by himself.
So Erica bought herself and the man each a breakfast. Then she walked over and handed him the bag with the breakfast. It was a very nice deed. But the police sergeant went a big step further. Erica sat down on the raised concrete area with him and they had their breakfasts together.
A woman named Tianna was across the street from Dunkin’ Donuts and witnessed the officer’s actions. She started snapping photos that she would post on Facebook.
Says Tianna: “It truly made my morning.”
Officials with the Ocala Police Department noticed those photos and the story about them and later posted them on their Instagram profile. Erica, who also heads up the department’s K-9 unit, and the unidentified man had a good conversation during their morning meal. At no time was she looking for any publicity during her talk with the man, but she sure got it, as the posts on it went viral.
Says Erica: “He turned out to be a very nice man who just has a sad story. He is a person.”
Now, if you ask Erica, she certainly wasn’t doing anything all that special. She was just treating a human being like a human being. And isn’t that what we should all be doing anyway?
