Marleen Brooks, of San Francisco, California, came home one day to find a very sad note. It was from one of her neighbors… one she did not know.
The note read: “Would you consider to become my friend. I’m 90 years old- live alone. All my friends have passed away. I’m so lonesome and scared. Please I pray for someone.”
The very next day Marleen and one of her friends paid a visit to her lonely neighbor, and they brought her cupcakes, and plenty of smiles. Marleen was so excited about the visit to the woman, named Wanda, that she had to write and tell local newscaster Frank Somerville all about it.
She told him the story and wrote: “Frank! She’s such a sweet lady! And she was over the moon when we came over.
Wanda said: ‘I hope you didn’t think I was stupid for writing you, but I had to do something. Thank you so much for coming over. I’ve lived here for 50 years and don’t know any of my neighbors.’
Wanda has 3 sons, one died last year of cancer. The other two live far away. She’s 90 and is on oxygen and has congestive heart failure, osteoporosis, among other ailments.
We brought her cupcakes (didn’t have enough time with work to make the banana bread). I also made sure she knew she can call us at anytime and that I’ll be back to spend time with her! I’m sure Wanda and I will have some great times.”
UPDATE ON ELDERLY WOMAN WHO WANTED A FRIEND Earlier today I posted about how Marleen Brooks came home and found a note…Posted by Frank Somerville KTVU on Thursday, 27 April 2017
Frank was extremely pleased to hear from Marleen and all about her visit with Wanda. And then Frank suggested that if Marleen sees other elderly people in her neighborhood, she might want to knock on their doors as well… just to say Hi. Because being older, and being all alone, can be devastating.
Maybe that’s something we should ALL keep in mind.
