Robert Downey Jr. Wants Johnny Depp in Sherlock Holmes 3 — 4 Reasons it Won’t Happen

Johnny Depp is embroiled in a bitter defamation suit against his ex-wife Amber Heard. According to the actor, the court struggle and Heard’s abuse allegations lost him a multi-million dollar payout for Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

According to rumors, longtime buddy Robert Downey Jr. wishes to provide a helpful hand by having Depp co-star in Sherlock Holmes 3. The thought of one buddy assisting another in need is wonderful, but there are various reasons why Downey and Depp won’t co-star in Sherlock Holmes 3.

Johnny Depp has previously been dismissed from a franchise by Warner Bros.

The rights to the Sherlock Holmes films are owned by Warner Bros. The same may be said for the Harry Potter spin-off movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Depp played the title role in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindewald in 2018, however he did not appear in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Warner Bros. requested Depp to leave the part, and he agreed.

Warner Bros. apparently removed Depp from a key property because of his legal difficulties. It makes sense that they would be hesitant to cast him in another big series. That’s a first for Depp in the Sherlock Holmes rumor.

‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ has no set release date.

The cast of Sherlock Holmes 3 include series regulars Downey, Jude Law, Eddie Marsan, and Jarred Harris. Dexter Fletcher is listed as the director on the page, but no more details are provided. There is no mention of a release year, let alone a target date. There are no supporting actors. There was only a skeleton crew.

Downey’s Marvel Cinematic Universe duties stopped filming from beginning in 2016. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the December 2021 release was canceled. For years, time and inertia have held the third film in the series in place.

In summary, the third film is currently a dream. Another setback for Depp’s participation in Sherlock Holmes 3.

Robert Downey Jr. can’t simply cast Johnny Depp in ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’ since he wishes to.

Downey chooses to look out for his pal, which is a thoughtful gesture. The Iron Man actor wields considerable power in Hollywood, yet he can’t simply add Depp to the cast as he wishes to.

As previously said, Warner Bros. is reluctant to bring Depp back to the Holmes franchise after removing him from Fantastic Beasts. Furthermore, Downey is not the film’s director or producer. He can argue all he wants, but in the end, he has little influence on casting decisions.

Downey may attempt a power move by threatening to walk away from Sherlock Holmes 3, but it would backfire. Warner Bros. may then recast Downey or abandon the project. In any instance, a walkout would thwart Depp’s chances of entering the ensemble.

Depp might not have a free schedule to film ‘Sherlock Holmes 3’.

Depp may have missed out on a large Pirates 6 paycheck as a result of Heard’s assault allegations, exacerbating his financial woes. He lost a large portion of his movie riches due to mismanagement by his finance team. Depp also lavished himself on wine, residences, a French town, a private island, and a boat that he later sold to J.K. Rowling.

If Depp’s financial condition is as poor as it looks, he will not be able to decline work after the trial is over. If that’s the case, and he’s more open to taking on parts, his schedule may add up fast. And if he is too preoccupied with other commitments, he will simply not be able to take a role in Sherlock Holmes 3.

With Warner Bros.’ stance on Depp, the production halt, Downey’s lack of influence in casting, and the result of his trial, Depp in Sherlock Holmes 3 is very certainly a no-go.
