Sometimes, when you see a special moment, you’ve just gotta pull out the camera and snap a shot. For one woman, that shot came at a mall, and here’s a story where Santa shows someone a great degree of respect.
Gina Stecher Wilbur was doing some Christmas shopping recently at a mall in Delaware when she spotted something very heartwarming. It was jolly old St. Nick making his regular visit at the mall. But as Santa was walking through the mall, he came upon 93-year-old veteran Bob Smiley, sitting at one of the benches surrounding a mall plant. Santa just HAD to stop… and kneel down for the veteran… and thank him for his service to the country.
Says Gina, who took a photo of the moment and posted it on Facebook: “Christmas shopping with Cavan and took a second to sit on a bench near Santa’s workshop… then Santa steps away from his Chair… he walks over to a veteran sitting on the wall… as Santa approaches, the veteran stands and Santa takes a knee.
I hear Santa telling the gentleman, in a soft voice, of others he knew who served. He shakes his hand with genuine gratefulness thanking him for his service and returns to the children. Best moment of my day.”
Gina’s photo of Santa and the elderly World War II veteran made its way wide across the social media. Bob said he always appreciates it when people come up to him and thank him.
Says Santa: “We owe a debt of gratitude to men like this, that have made such a life-changing decision to give up themselves, be willing to lay down their life even, for other people.”
And I’M with SANTA on that one.
