At about 11:15 p.m., a homeowner, 44, was sitting on the stairs outside his home when he heard a tremendous commotion from the street.

He approached the sounds and noticed two persons under a vehicle. When the two males noticed the homeowner, they crept out from behind the car, drew out pistols, and shot. In reaction, the homeowner drew his own revolver and shot again, hitting one of the gunmen in the neck.

The suspect was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center and declared dead.

Darion Blackman, 25, was recognized as the victim by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The second shooter left the area and is still at large.

The homeowner had a concealed carry license, and he was not hurt in the event, according to police. He even denied paramedics’ assistance.
