Jason Gable and his partner Kwame Anderson were driving their Coors beer delivery truck through St. Paul, Minnesota. They were crossing a bridge there when they spotted a man on the ledge, preparing to jump. They yelled, “Hey!!” to get the man’s attention… then they stopped their rig and ran over to him.
Kwame said, “Hey, sir, I don’t know whatever it is that’s going in your life right now, man. But whatever you think you want to do, please, don’t do it. It’s not worth it. Come back to the other side and we can just talk.”
The man yelled at Kwame: “Man, you don’t know me! You don’t care about me! You don’t got no reason to be stopping here. You don’t know me!”
By this time, Jason had made his way to the two men, and told the man on the ledge: “Hey, I don’t have to know you to care about you, man. I don’t want anybody to do what I think you are trying to do right now. So, if you can, just come to the other side where it’s safe and we can talk.”
The stranger then said: “I’m going to jump, man. Leave me alone! I’m going to jump!”
He lurched the opposite way, as if he was going to jump into the oncoming traffic. Kwame then took out his phone and quickly dialed 911… And then, it hit Kwame… Denzel Washington.
Now, at this point, your brain’s gotta be going: What in the world does Denzel have to do with the situation at hand? Great actor, by the way. But Kwame was thinking of Denzel playing a cop and handling a situation like this as a negotiator.
So Kwame asked him his name and he said: Leroy, and Kwame told him HIS name. And the desperate man said: “Life is just too hard. Life is too hard. I don’t want to live here no more.”
Kwame told the man to calm down… and by now, police were on the scene, and they’re hardly saying anything at all… because Kwame is in control and he’s developed a rapport with the man. Kwame ended up talking to Leroy for nearly an hour, when he asked: “Leroy, what can I do to get you off this bridge? Do you want something to eat?” Leroy said No. Kwame asked: “Do you want some money?” Leroy said No, I’m not a beggar. Kwame asked: “Do you want a drink?” With that, Leroy’s eyes lit up a little. “Hey!”, said Kwame… “do you want a beer? Leroy paused for a few seconds and said, “Maybe…”
Kwame told the police officer standing next to him to keep Leroy occupied, and that he would be right back. Kwame then dashed over to his truck and pulled out a 12-pack of Coors Light. He then ran back to Leroy and said: “Leroy, if you get down from that ledge, this whole 12-pack is yours.”
Leroy looked at Kwame for a few seconds, and then looked at the 12-pack. Then he started inching his way across the ledge toward the beer. Kwame slowly kept moving back and Leroy kept moving toward him… until he was finally off the ledge.
It’s somewhat unclear what happened after that… police probably took Leroy to a safe place for awhile. But one thing is certain: A man’s life was saved by Kwame, the truck driver…. and Denzel, the actor….and Coors, the banquet beer.
