According to cops, a woman who shouted anti-Asian slurs and pepper-sprayed four women in Chelsea has been detained and booked with hate crimes.
Madeline Barker, 47, of Merritt Island, Fla., was supposed to testify in Manhattan Criminal Court early Saturday on counts of assault as a hate crime, attempted attack as a hate crime, and harassment as a hate crime, according to the NYPD.
The upsetting June 11 attack was partially captured on film.
The accused, who was dressed in a bright fuchsia, was caught on camera yelling at a group of Asian women, “Go back where you came from!”
Victim Nicole, 24, said earlier this week that she assumed she would be secure in the heart of Chelsea, in the middle of the day, with so many individuals around. However, “it is not safe to walk out in the city as an Asian. It’s frightening in New York.
Nicole, a graphic designer, said she and three female buddies – another 24-year-old and two 25-year-olds – had left the L.E.A.F flower show in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District and were at 14th Street and Ninth Avenue in Chelsea around 6 p.m. when they realised one of them had lost a bag in the area.

When the insane accused approached the group, ‘You’re bothering me,’ the victim recalled.
The situation worsened, according to the victim, and her group informed the stranger, they were not bothering her, they were simply trying to figure out which route to walk in.
She remembered the accused responded she knows what they are attempting to do, they are harassing her. To which the victim replied they’re not trying to annoy her, but she can ask respectfully if she wants them to move.
The victim stated that she was born in the United States and reared in the city.
One of the women began recording the irate accused, who knocked the phone out of her grip.
Then she turned to an Asian onlooker they didn’t know and shouted, ‘Take your b%tches back to where you all came from,’ Nicole stated.
According to investigators, the perpetrator then pepper-sprayed the quartet and fled.
